As a triple threat (artist, producer, guitarist) David E Beats aims to reach both the head and the ear with his strong musical and lyrical abilities. His music is a genre-blurring blend of Hip Hop, Pop, R&B, Rock and Electro, an absolute tapestry of diverse musical influences. Hailing from Washington D.C, David E Beats had never listened to Rap music before the age of 15. He started to develop an interest in Hip Hop when he bought his first Rap CD, The Blueprint by Jay Z. In the past 3 months, David E Beats was featured as the next artist to watch on Hip Hop Ruckus section On Da Come Up and recently crowned DX Next artist by Hip Hop DX. Other features include XXLMag.Com, AllHipHop, Digiwaxx; newspapers such as the Washington Afro-American Newspaper, Diamondback (University of Maryland); FM and AM radio on WHCR 90.3 FM, WCCR 640 AM, and many more. He also inked 2 sponsorship deals: 8 and 9 Clothing, Platform NYC. David E Beats currently gearing up to release his debut album "Exit".
V: What’s good David! Tell everyone about yourself and where you’re from?
DB: Hey! I am David E Beats, Rapper, Producer, and Guitarist hailing from Washington DC!
V: What was it like growing up, who was your biggest supporter?
DB: My experience in growing up in the DMV area was a good one. I liked the environment and it provided me with a good environment to hone my skills. My biggest supporter was myself, mainly because I was the only one keeping the driving force inside me going. I started rapping immediately after hearing The Blueprint by Jay Z, my first rap album.
V: Who were some of the people that you grew up listening to?
DB: The artists I came up listening to were literally all of them. I wanted to learn as much about Hip Hop as possible so I really went back and did my research.
V: Who would you like to work with if you had the opportunity in front of you?
DB: I would love to work with all artists, I have a passion and I'd work with any artists in a second.
V: Who are your top 5 MC's/Rappers/Lyricists out right now kill en the game.
DB: I don't have a top 5. I think those lists are un-necessary, mainly because you can't gauge an artist against another. I like each rapper for what they bring to the table.
V: Would you rather stay independent or get picked up by a label and why?
DB: I would love to be signed, mainly because I'd need a machine backing me to get to the level I need to be.
V: What are you bringing to the game? How important is integrity in your music?
DB: I am pioneering a whole new genre of Hip Hop, which I dubbed New Vogue. It is an artist that makes a whole new style of music, and remains true to their craft. I also bring musicality to the game, through my guitar that I bring onstage. Integrity is very important because in this game of lies and secrets that’s all you have at the end of the day. If I can’t stay true to my passion then I shouldn't be in this game.
V: With all the music that’s out there’s a steady trend that stands out 2 you?
DB: I like how the southern artists are making a lane for themselves. I feel like they take things into their own hands and that's amazing.
V: What are your thoughts on the music industry today?
DB: My thoughts on the music industry are that it is in a period of transition, as is the world. Give it some time, find a proper business and marketing model, and you will see a boom in a few years.
V: Why should someone go out there and cop your mix tape rather then the next person hustlin' the same grind as you? What makes you so different?
DB: I am different because I am. Period. Why wouldn't you want to cop my mix tape? Not only do I play guitar, I spit the hottest rhymes and make the hottest beats.
V: Any advice for them or up an coming artist such as yourself?
DB: Go hard, stay passionate, and if you want something, ask for it right away. That's about it; those 3 things always work for me.
V: You know there’s a lot of cats out there just like you who are hungry and eating chips, starving to get to the filet mignon on top. They often get so caught up in the hype then they forget about the D word (dedication) Sidetracked by the limelight. We refer to them as one hit wonders. Are you here to stay?
DB: I've already made 3 mix tapes in 2009 and planning another full length album in 2010. I’m already writing my next batch of songs and will hit the studio sometime in the spring. That answers your question?
V: Alright alright that’s what’s up showing and proving. So do you write, do your own beats and produce as well? How do you bring all collaborative efforts together?
DB: I make my own beats, write all the lyrics, arrange, and do the guitar parts myself. I don't trust anyone else’s ears with my music.
V: So when you’re not writing and working on new material what do you like doing as a hobby or just on an ordinary day?
DB: There are no ordinary days for me. If I don't work I feel like I am falling off and I go into the lab and work harder.
V: Any projects you’ve got in the works that you can tell us about? What are you working on now?
DB: As of today I have an album dropping January 4th 2010 called EXIT. I will be going to Chicago to shoot the video to the second single off the album entitled Maybe Tomorrow feat. J Ira.
V: Being as you coming up in this wave of technology, what is your take on the bootleggers?
DB: My take on bootleggers is that on one hand, they are necessary, on the other they mess a lot of things up. I have yet to experience that so I wouldn’t know what to do if my album started getting bootlegged heavily.
V: Well album sales will never be what they were. Now they have iTunes and all these sites where you can sell your music, which is cool but could never amount up to selling an album. How do you think that will change when your time comes to shine on top? Would you rather sell your music VIA Internet or tangible albums?
DB: I think that’s sales are making the switch to digital platforms. More money is being made from downloads and clicks than physical album sales. Which I feel isn’t a bad thing.
V: Now, There’s alot of young cats entering this rap game without alot/any knowledge, backup plans or education, thinking it’s easier than it is. What is your perception of how you will accomplish your career how you’re actually working ya way to the top? What are you doing to make ya name known?
DB: Here is my 5 step process to achieve the level of success I have seen:
- Work
- Then work harder
- Then stop, recess
- Put things in proper perspective
- Back to work
V: Real Talk. Well David I want to thank you for taking the time out to chop it up with me and the THH fam. We wish you the best of luck in your success and see you are on the right road just keep it moving man. I hope a lot of youngins and others hustling to reach this same goal take time out to read your interview. Very inspirational and clear on the hard work and effort it really does take. You need to take this seriously MAN!!! Proof is right here readers! Anything else ya want to say drop or shout before we get up out of here?
DB: I have a few people to shout out, but the most important one is Olivia Dikambi, for believing in my talent and fighting for me every step of the way.
